Holly Champion, Soprano
Holly is featured as “Isabel” in this year's production of The Pirates of Penzance, and is also the understudy for the role of "Kate".
Holly is a Sydney-based researcher, writer, performer, administrator and teacher in music and theatre, with a PhD specialisation in opera performance. Her love of the stage showed early: as a baby, she would bite pieces of toast into puppet shapes and make them engage in dialogue. Performing on piano and as a singer-actor as a child and teenager, she moved to Sydney in 2003 and enrolled in a Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Arts at UNSW.
A school exchange program to Austria in 2002 had ignited a love of the German language and all things German and Austrian, and in 2006 Holly undertook a scholarship-funded student exchange to the University of Freiburg in Germany to study musicology. She graduated from UNSW with First Class Honours, the Media Film & Theatre Award and the University Medal in 2008, with a thesis on performances of Wagner’s Das Rheingold.
Under the supervision of Prof. Dorottya Fabian and supported by a Research Excellence scholarship, Holly undertook PhD research into opera performance, graduating in 2016. Holly’s thesis analysed recent productions of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and she has interviewed and worked with some of the opera industry’s leaders in Australia, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK.
Having recently started work as Executive Assistant to a member of the Executive at Opera Australia, Holly also volunteers her skills as Opera Manager at Shh Centre 4 Hybrid Arts, Parramatta and North-Sydney-based young artists' company Operantics. Holly continues to enjoy performing in her spare time. She has worked professionally as an actor, dancer, singer, pianist, composer and arts administrator.
