About Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney
For over four decades, Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney has been where passion meets artistry – a vibrant community where the timeless wit and melody of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas come alive through ensemble productions of exceptional quality. Since 1985, we’ve nurtured performing talent, delighted audiences, and served as custodians of a beloved theatrical tradition, all while providing a welcoming home for anyone who loves these enchanting works.
Our Journey: From Vision to Legacy
What began in 1985 as The Savoy Arts Company has blossomed into something truly special. Our founders shared a vision of bringing Gilbert & Sullivan’s brilliant operettas to Australian audiences with the care and quality these masterpieces deserve. In 2014, we embraced the name Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney, reflecting our deep specialisation and Sydney roots while honouring our commitment to these incomparable works.
Through over forty years of dedication, we’ve remained true to our founding principles while evolving to meet the needs of our growing community. Every production, every performance, every moment on stage represents our ongoing love affair with Gilbert & Sullivan’s unique blend of clever wordplay, memorable melodies, and theatrical magic.
Where Artistry Meets Opportunity
Our ensemble-style productions, supported by a magnificent 28-piece orchestra (or a palm court orchestra of 8-16+piano in regional venues) and professional-quality costumes and sets, create an immersive environment where emerging performers develop their craft alongside experienced artists. This isn’t just about putting on shows…it’s about creating a pathway for artistic growth that has launched careers across Australia and beyond.
Whether you’re a seasoned performer seeking to explore the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, a music student building stage experience, or someone who’s always dreamed of performing but never had the opportunity, you’ll find a welcoming community here. Our ensemble approach means every voice matters, every role contributes to the whole, and every production becomes a collaborative achievement.
Many who’ve graced our stage at the Smith Auditorium in North Sydney have gone on to professional careers in opera and musical theatre – a testament to the rigorous, supportive development we provide. But we’re equally proud of those who perform with us simply for the joy of it, finding in our productions a creative outlet and a community of like-minded souls.
Bringing Opera to Every Corner
Our commitment extends far beyond our North Sydney home. Through our regional tours to places like the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall in Bundanoon and the Art House in Wyong, we bring professional-quality opera to communities that might otherwise miss these theatrical treasures. It’s our way of ensuring that geography never stands between someone and the magic of Gilbert & Sullivan.
Throughout the year, our concert series offers additional opportunities to experience these beloved works (and other similar works) in more intimate settings. Each performance, whether a full production or concert presentation, reflects our belief that great art should be accessible to everyone.
As a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, we’re driven by mission rather than profit. This means we can focus entirely on what matters most: preserving Gilbert & Sullivan’s legacy, developing performing talent, and making opera accessible to diverse communities across Sydney and regional New South Wales. Your support through donations helps us continue this important work, and we’re pleased to provide tax-deductible receipts for all contributions.
A Community That Welcomes All
At the heart of everything we do is our belief that great art flourishes when everyone has a place at the table. We’re an inclusive organisation that welcomes performers of all cultures, abilities, and experience levels. What unites us isn’t where we come from or how long we’ve been performing, it’s our shared passion for Gilbert & Sullivan’s enduring appeal.
Our productions provide more than just performance opportunities. They offer a chance to be part of something larger than yourself, to contribute to a tradition that has brought joy to audiences for more than a century, and to discover the particular magic that happens when talented people come together in service of great art.

SMITH AUDITORIUM LYRIC THEATRE, Shore School, North Sydney 2014-2025. In 2014, with our production of H.M.S Pinafore, we launched a new primary Sydney season with a larger capacity venue - the Smith Auditorium at Shore School. We are appreciate Shore's cooperation with us and for allowing this opportunity and the scope it affords to reach a wider audience base.
BUNDANOON SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL HALL. Every year, we take our production to the Southern Highlands and perform to a packed house in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. Our weekend at Bundanoon is one of the highlights of our production year and has become a tradition. THE ART HOUSE, Wyong. 2022 was our first year performing at the Art House. It is always exciting to be performing in a new venue, especially one of such a fine calibre. ZENITH THEATRE, Chatswood. For the period 1988-2013, our performing group staged its principal productions at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood. The venue has proved to be popular with our patrons due to the comfortable raked seating, professional atmosphere and ease of parking. During our time at the Zenith we have trained students in stage management, introduced them to the techniques of theatre lighting and provided work experience opportunities for students. ANITA'S THEATRE THIRROUL 2017 & 2018. We took our productions of The Pirates of Penzance & The Ghosts of Ruddigore to the Wollongong area and performed to G&S patrons at Anita's Theatre in Thirroul. Our country tour destinations continues to be one of the highlights of our productions each year; Thirroul was a much welcomed addition to our tour. MONTGOMERY PAVILION THEATRE, RSL Anzac Village, Narrabeen, many years until 2016. The Montgomery Pavilion Theatre at the RSL Anzac Village is another of our regular performance venues. The cast finds this a valuable preparation for our main season in Sydney. Our productions have been very well received and we are delighted to join with the management at the Retirement Village in a mutually beneficial fund raising venture. |
