Jane Van Balen, Mezzo-Soprano
Jane is featured as “Ruth” in this season's Pirates of Penzance.
After more years than she is willing to admit, Jane returned to tread the boards just before the pandemic in the role of Ruth in NUCMS' production of Pirates of Penzance. She is thrilled to be playing Ruth again, this time with GSOS.
Jane has an LMusA in singing and a Masters of Music Studies (Pedagogy) Singing from the Sydney Con, studying with Rowena Cowley and for quite a few years taught Voice when she was an active member of ANATS. Her own voice teachers included Angela Giblin, David Parker, Maree Ryan, Lyell Austen and Margaret Lees.
Her previous roles include several G&S such as Buttercup (HMS Pinafore); Phoebe (Yeomen of the Guard); and Tessa (Gondoliers). Other roles included Florence Pike (Albert Herring - Britten); Edith Course Evans (Titanic); Ottavia (Coronation of Poppea - Monteverdi), and both Mrs Pearce and Eliza (in different productions!!) in My Fair Lady.
By day, Jane is a Research Librarian at Macquarie University.

The Savoy Arts Company Incorporated has been producing shows since 1985, specialising in the operettas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. To better reflect its primary artistic objective, commencing from 2014, the company will be performing as Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney. Our performing group has provided excellent training in all aspects of stagecraft for performers who have made a career in opera and musical theatre. The Ensemble style of our productions not only provides the chorus with experience in singing with an orchestra, but also provides ample opportunity to learn and develop skills in characterisation and stagecraft.
