Oksana Popova, Mezzo Soprano
Oksana is featured as “Peep-Bo” in this year’s production of The Mikado.
Originally from Tula, town of Russian gunsmiths, Oksana always had a passion for music. After graduating from Moscow Medical Academy she decided to make a radical career move and started studying vocal jazz. One year later she was admitted into Moscow Contemporary Art Institute where she majored in opera singing. Upon completing her course, Oksana remained with the Contemporary Art Institute as a part-time teacher and also joined Moscow Beethoven’s music school as a head of singing department. Never ending her studies, Oksana undertook German songs traineeship with professor Siegfried Lorenz in Berlin University of the Arts.
Oksana’s work both as a teacher and as a performer brought her numerous awards, including grand prix of “21th Century Art” competition (Lonigo, Italy) and first prize of International Russian Romance Competition (Tallin, Estonia). For her contribution towards music education, Oksana was awarded the title of Distinguished Cultural Figure of Moscow.
Oksana’s repertoire includes chamber, baroque and opera pieces. Oksana directed and appeared in multiple performances and concerts in Russia and ex-USSR countries. After moving to Sydney in 2018, Oksana joins G&S for her first production in Australia.

The Savoy Arts Company Incorporated has been producing shows since 1985, specialising in the operettas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. To better reflect its primary artistic objective, commencing from 2014, the company will be performing as Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney. Our performing group has provided excellent training in all aspects of stagecraft for performers who have made a career in opera and musical theatre. The Ensemble style of our productions not only provides the chorus with experience in singing with an orchestra, but also provides ample opportunity to learn and develop skills in characterisation and stagecraft.
